An uptick in violence
After regularly scanning the Colorado Springs Police blotter for months, I noticed a trend: violence was increasing in areas with larger homeless populations. Police confirmed my observation and invited us on a ride-along to see what was happening.
State of housing
Some people refer to Colorado Springs as “Apartment City.” Construction of high-rise apartments seems to dominate the downtown skyline. After talking with sources, I learned the boom in building was about to drop dramatically.

After a few months of covering issues within Colorado’s juvenile justice system, I came across a nonprofit called Forge Evolution. I was so happy to share the program’s story because of the opportunities it brings to juveniles who need a second chance.

As malls in Colorado Springs garner a reputation for high crime and vacant storefronts, I contacted several business owners to hear their visions for the future.
Crumbling budget
One small Southern Colorado city has been facing a large issue: deteriorating roads and not enough money to fix them. After a sales tax increase to fund the roadwork was shot down by voters, I followed up with city officials a year later to press them on solutions.
